Are West Ham United a 'big club' ?
I've just been talking/arguing with a work colleague as he said West Ham are not a big club.

He compared us to the likes of Derby, Forest, Birmingham & Leicester.

I said his comments were a joke an offensive but does he have a point; how big are we?

I mentioned that I would be disgusted if we appointed Steve McClaren as our new manager but he said we are looking at unrealistic candidates and McClaren is suited to a club like ours.

I think I'm a realist when is comes to WHU. I think we are on a club on the up and fans from other clubs do not realise the potential our great club has.

What do you reckon? Why do pundits and fans from other clubs have a problem with us being ambitious?

(My colleague is a AFC Wimbledon fan)

We're big in a Hollywood hooligan movie way and I think that has spread a reputation that hasn't been matched on the pitch.

Not read all the thread but it hinges upon what is actually big

Royal Engineers have won more trophies than us and financially, here is a fact I picked up recently

When the tv deal fully kicks in, not even including the next overseas sales, every single premier club, all twenty, instantly land in the top 40 wealthiest in Europe

That gives some idea to the scale of it, Bournemouth or their ilk in the top 40 - fuck me

Sounds about right to me. Have to accept Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal are top tier. I'd put Chelsea and Man City behind them, but ahead of us (for now) by virtue of recent success and financial clout. Then a group of WHU, Spurs, Everton, Newcastle, Villa based on achievements over time and consistent support.

We should be a big club but our set of chairman's over the years have also thought that we would settle for an occasional cup run every 10 years or so and play attractive football (and we do/did)

Only got to look at when we have a European game (or friendly) we take loads more than the 4x2's the gooners , Man City and Newcastle and always will

Still what does it matter the yanks made a film about us not Man Utd , Chelsea or Liverpool

If by "big" club you mean supported by loads of fat cunts then yes.

A resounding sweaty, bingo winged yes.

When I was younger it was easy. Big clubs don't get two players per Pannini sticker, and the toy shop sticks your Subbuteo team.

In terms of support aren't we 11th or 12th in the country. Does that make us a big club?

In terms of success, probably not.

Depends what your baseing it on really.

I would say we are a big club overall but there are bigger.

220000 supporters turning up for a cup final - probably a world record. Small club?

Owners in 60's not interested in investing in the club...wanted a no-risk easy cash business...

Proper Investments and a Future oriented ownership would have established us as a big club...like ManU...Arsenal...

Compared to Luton Town we are a massive (MASSIVE) club.

Compared to Real Madrid we are a minnow.

So it is impossible to answer, other than my own take that we are a big club considering the relative lack of success we've had and we still sell out to capacity 35000 each week. On that score Newcastle are also a big club

"but when I see Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal I have to accept that they are bigger and more successful clubs than West Ham."

I'll give you ManU & Arsenal being bigger & more successful but chelsea? They've bought their success & i'll argue 'till i'm blue in the face that they're bigger than us. I will never ever accept that!

In terms of worldwide support and recognition and "image" we most definitely trump several other more successful English teams.

Re: Are West Ham United a 'big club' ?
We are not a 'big' club in terms of worldwide fans, revenue or success.
I have us in a second tier below those clubs who have a long history of success, trophies, big attendances and massive marketing.
We are certainly not a small club or a shitty yo-yo club like Souness recently suggested.

We even have an opportunity to push into the top tier over the next decade if the right decisions are made and things go well on the pitch.

We are a big club who have been terrible mismanaged for decades. Why the hell we didnt kick on and build (more) in the late 60's is beyond me. I guess we got complascent.

Mclaren is a pratt....I'd be most pissed off if we got him.

Credit to the Owners...they are putting WHUFC on the right road for the future...

While currently not a "Big Club"...as in Top 6 across European level...

We definitely are not in the ranks of Derby ...Brum...Burnley...Leicester...MK etc etc...Far from it...

Well above those...and rising fast...
